SAN VITO CHIETINO REGION OF ABRUZZO

S
an Vito
is known for its amazing views and the charm of its coastline, full of many hidden spots and mysteries.  It is also appreciated for the diverseness of its landscape, for the clear water of its beaches, for the fruits of its countryside and sea.  People come here for its healthy air, the mild weather and for its seafood, which is celebrated in books, guides and articles in Italian and foreign magazines.

The fairy tale atmosphere of San Vito Chietino is evident when you realize that the village seems to be floating on water, lying on a hill that goes to the sea, with an aristocratic detachment from the surrounding landscape.

A picturesque and pleasant  small town in Abruzzo, in the province of Chieti, on the Adriatic Sea.  It is near and well connected to the mountains, to the Parks of Abruzzo, to the ferries for the Tremiti Islands and Croatia, and is part of the recent Union, “Citta della Frentania e della Costa trabocchi.”

One of the most important guests of San Vito was Gabriele D’Annunzio who, following the advice of the painter Francesco Paolo Michetti, found here his “ideal hermitage” to fortify the spirit and spent the summer of 1889 here with the enchanting Elvira Fraternali Leoni, his Barbarella .

Stand on the marble stone laid by the Archeoclub in the centre of Piazza Garibaldi, where once was the parish church, demolished in 1870. At your back, the round flowerbeds with palm trees. In front of the the “façade of the old town hall, looking like the background of a stage.”

From the small square of the town hall, take corso Trento e Treiste that will lead you to the Belvedere (viewpoint).  On your right, is the open air theatre “I due pini”, working in summer.

On the rooftop, the view opens at 360, giving you a feeling of never ending freedom; to the west, the Maiella and Gran Sasso mountains; to the north, the port of Ortona and the town “caved in the blue”; to the east, the vast sea that unites with the sky at the horizon; to the south east, Punta Penna del Vasto and the chance to see, with proper weather, the dark shape of the Tremiti Islands; under you, the Marina de S. Vito, the coastline dotted by trabocchi.

Not far, indicated by a plaque, is the house that hosted the family of the musician Francesco Paolo Tosti, before moving to Ortona – This house is “VILLA DAVIDE”.
